The Power of Sleep

Aug 24, 10 The Power of Sleep

Health benefits of sleep Dios, I’m exhausted. But what’s new about that? I bet you are too. It’s a well-established fact that the majority of Americans suffer from sleep deprivation. That’s because unlike our families back in the motherland we don’t have the luxury of powering down for a couple of hours every day for a refreshing siesta. Aside from making you cranky and giving you dark circles under your eyes, did you know that lack of sleep can actually be harmful to your health?

That’s right, sleep is not just for beauty anymore. Your body restores itself while you rest; it performs general maintenance, tune-up and balancing of your hormones, metabolism and all systems in general. Sleep is like Jiffy Lube for your body. A cumulative deficiency of Z’s can lead to heart disease, diabetes and depression down the road.  You can facilitate a good night’s sleep by making your environment apt for rest. Make sure your bedroom is dark, keep it at a nice and cool temperature and block out the noise. Try avoiding caffeine as much as possible and get some exercise during the day. If you have trouble falling asleep you can take some melatonin, which is a hormone that occurs naturally in your body and helps regulate your sleep/wake cycle. There are many more things you can do to improve your slumber, which you can read about here. Even short siestas are restorative so don’t be afraid to embrace your roots and go for one every once in a while. You deserve it chica!”
