Have you heard? It’s all over the grapevine. Grapes are what you should be snacking on if you want to live a long life and look young. Yes, those small, innocuous-looking fruit may just hold the secret to the fountain of youth. Straight up! We’re not making stuff up here just to get you to eat fruit, like our mamis who would make up the most magical of properties for produce just to get us to eat healthy (“Eating tomatoes will make your eyes blue, didn’t you know that?”) At least her intentions were good. But, to the point: grapes are rich in a natural antioxidant called resveratrol which has been linked to reduced risk of cancer, atherosclerosis, heart disease, and brain diseases like Alzheimer’s, not to mention it activates enzymes that slow aging. Grapes also contain a particular combination of flavonoids that prevent the growth and spread of cancer cells. As if that weren’t enough, studies have also shown that grape extract has an antimicrobial effect on bacteria like E. coli and staph. Before you run out the door and deplete your local supermarket of their entire stock of grapes, remember you can get the same benefits from grape juice and wine (either red or white). Don’t go too crazy on the vino, though, ‘cause too much can generate free radicals thus undoing all the grapey goodness. Load up on the uvas, and live long and prosper!
