DIY Christmas

Dec 01, 11 DIY Christmas

‘Tis the season to be jolly and take out a loan. If you want to check off everyone on your gift list, that is. Christmas is a fantastic time, undeniably. You get to see all your family – you got primos, and tios flying in from everywhere – indulge in some seasonal treats you otherwise wouldn’t go near (buñuelos are delicious, but your hips can only take them once a year), and even get a few cool presents. But it can also be pretty stressful if your current financial situation prevents you from spending as much as you’d like on presents for your loved ones. Let’s face it, times are tough, but just because you can’t spend hundreds of dollars on lavish gifts doesn’t mean that you can’t show someone you care with a homemade present. Here are some ideas:

  • Booze it up! You can take any boring old vodka and infuse it with all kinds of delicious flavors, including citrus fruits, berries, vanilla beans, even Skittles. Put it in a nice bottle with a nice label, and you’ve got a ready-made cocktail! It takes a couple of weeks to prepare, so you better get started soon if you’re planning on getting liquored up.
  • If you’ve got some Handy Manny in you, break out the tools and build your very own asterisk clock. It’s not as hard to make as you’d think and the result is pretty impressive.
  • Abuelas are always saying they want pictures “de verdad”, meaning not digital. If you use Instagram on your smartphone, you can go to Printstagr.am and have your pictures printed and bounded in mini photo books so you can give abuelita pics she can actually show her friends.
  • If you want to take it one step further, also make her a picture frame out of silk rose petals to put her favorite snapshot in.

Feliz DIY Navidad!
