Beware Poisonous Make-Up

Nov 04, 11 Beware Poisonous Make-Up

Usually when we shop for make-up the characteristics we look for are things like staying power and how well it blends in. Rarely do we stop to think about the actual components of the make-up we’re buying, and the fact that we usually go out wearing a face full of nasty chemicals. Just because a product doesn’t immediately irritate your skin or give you an allergic reaction doesn’t mean it doesn’t have long-term effects. Many of the substances found in cosmetics are downright cochinadas that can cause cancer and other health hazards. Since it’s mejor prevenir que curar, be on the lookout for harmful toxins (they’re listed right on the label!) and avoid any future health issues derived from the products designed to make you pretty:

  • Coal-tar colors: these chemicals are found in many “FD&C” or “D&C” colors used in makeup and hair dye. FD&C Blue 1 and FD &C Green 3 are carcinogenic, and impurities in other colors – D&C Red 33, FD&C Yellow 5 and FD&C Yellow 6 – have been shown to cause cancer when applied to the skin.
  • Formaldehyde: found in eye shadows, mascaras and nail polishes, the EPA classifies it as a probable human carcinogen. In its liquid state it can be present in the ingredients DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, and quaternium-15, and can be absorbed through the skin and nails.
  • Talc: has been analyzed for possibly contributing to ovarian cancer and lung disease.
  • Parabens and phthalates: preservatives used in makeup to prevent microbial growth. While these are known to protect consumers, they are also known to play a role implicated in carcinogenesis.

If you want to stay on the safe side, your best bet is organic make-up. It may be a little pricier, but your health is worth it, no? A tu salud!
