Basic Spices You Need As A Latina Ask anyone to describe Latinas, and ‘spicy’ is sure to be one of the top five terms. Our flavor, both in and out of the kitchen, is what we’re known for. But for the purposes of this article we are going to concentrate on culinary spice only. What are the seasonings that every Latina should always have in her cupboard?

For starters, garlic. It’s one of the essential flavors of our cuisine. It’s used in everything from flavoring beans to marinating meats and all kinds of sauces and dressings. While chiles are mostly associated with Mexican gastronomy, they are commonly used throughout Latin America as far south as Peru and Chile. Chiles are used in adobos, sauces and dry rubs. Up next is coriander, a.k.a. cilantro. This leafy green is a classic.  I can’t remember the last time I had a soup without it. It is also used in salads, sauces and relishes. The last essential spice is cumin. Its warm flavor gives a special zest to cooking all the way from Texas to South America. Especially tasty as a compliment to anything with chiles in it, and the secret ingredient in any salsa worth its salt!”
